Part 2 of Make Cornwall Great Again 3 with Jameson Spargo and Matt Harris where we continue to discuss the general and local elections from back in June.

Aug 14, 2017

This episode of the Kernow Kast is with Jameson Spargo and Matt Harris and we discuss the local and general elections and plenty of other topics too.

I broke this video up into two parts as it was over two and a half hours long so part 2 will be released in a few days.

Thanks for listening!

May 2, 2017

Jameson and I sit down to discuss both the local and general elections, make predictions and talk about the politics behind it all. It's a relaxed political discussion for the Cornish folk to enjoy instead of the heavy news organisations take on BREXIT, Elections and devolution for Cornwall!

Apr 28, 2017

Roy is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the St. Blazey area at the upcoming local elections and is also a member of the town and parish Councils in the same area.

We discuss different issues and topics ranging from roads to housing, local flooding issues and a various County wide topics.

This episode is available on YouTube, iTunes and Stitcher.

Apr 26, 2017

Pauline is running to be a Cornwall County Councillor on the 4th of may for the Conservative party in the St. Blazey Ward.

We discuss a wide range of topics from things she would like to implement in St. Blazey to County wide projects like the European City of Culture and the Stadium for Cornwall.

Im not typically a Tory supporter but Pauline makes a great case for herself in this podcast and if you are a St. Blazey resident you should really spend some time listening to what she has to say. Download on iTunes or Stitcher to listen on the move.

The thing I like most about this podcast is the fact it is the closest thing to having your own conversation with somebody that is going to be working for you in the County Council.

You can find Pauline doing the rounds in and around the St. Blazey area looking for your support on May 4th and on Facebook if you search for "Pauline Giles for Councillor" and have a look at her videos from around the area.

Tamsin is a very busy lady. While she raises 3 young children she runs Cornish Maid Marketing and Cornwall Baby Massage are her 2 main sources of income. Alongside all of this she has recently started the Mid Cornwall Business Network with her friend Amanda Young.

I went to their second meeting and made some real good connections. The slightly laid back, affordable approach the ladies have taken to this networking group has really appealed to a large group of business owners from all kinds of different fields!

You can contact Tamsin on the Mid Cornwall Business Network facebook page, Her websites; cornishmaidmarketing.co.uk and cornwallbabymassage.co.uk which are all on facebook too! Or her email which is Tamsin@cornishmaidmarketing.co.uk

Mike Hancock is the manager of the duchy 3 team Lanivet Inn FC. They are on the verge of promotion and have a possibility of winning the league.

I discuss with Mike the great season they have had, past seasons, players and the ongoings of a new village hall and sports facility that is being built in the village and how it will affect the community

Finally we have a guest!!

Matt was supposed to be on last week but was delayed due to an accident on A30 so we had to reschedule, but i believe it was worth the wait. We start by discussing Cornwall, and the differences between Newquay and Bodmin. We then discuss football and fitness which somehow progresses onto Brexit and some bigger picture stuff.

Kernow Kast Blog
#001
The Kernow Kast Begins

So I started the Kernow Kast the first week of February 2017 but it has actually been on my mind for more than two years. I originally thought of a YouTube channel where I would produce video content of business’ in Cornwall and then generate income from sponsorship, a bit like the Cornwall Channel, but I soon realised I didn’t have the means or knowledge to produce the top quality content I would need to make it a success. I did ask a few people if they would be interested in helping but its funny how many people you think would want to be involved aren’t interested.

From there I had to put all thoughts of this on hold while my partner and I prepared for the arrival of our first child who is now 16 months old. Once we were settled in our home I came up with the idea of producing a podcast based on very similar principles. Why? Because its cheap!! I already had a decent laptop and all I would need is some microphones. I looked at USB microphones, which would be easy plug in and go type thing but to get the best quality you are looking at around £150, which is not a big expenditure to start a business but a lot for a young family with one income. Luckily, I knew someone that had recently stopped producing a podcast they had been doing for about 4 years. They had built up a pretty significant following over that time but never found a way to turn it into a profitable, job creating venture. This was perfect for me and I asked if I could borrow their equipment. They said yes and where the 4th guest on my show. This is semi-pro level equipment that takes a little bit of practice and know how to get right, so I read blogs and YouTubed a little about how to use it and went from there. To use the basic settings it was quite straight forward, but I have made some big errors while recording that have taught me some really big lessons… Make sure the settings on the computer are correct so you are recording with the equipment and not the laptop microphone was lesson 1 from the very first podcast I recorded with my friend Shane.

From here I needed a way to get it out to people, Facebook and Twitter were a given. I decided against Instagram because:
A: Im not too great at photography and;
B: I didn't want to stretch myself across too many platforms and do a shit job. Better to be good at 1 or 2 rather than average at 3,4 or 5.

Along with the social media I always knew that YouTube was going to be a powerful tool in what I want to achieve, with the idea of video content still in my mind, but this isn't the best place for podcasts as its longer form and people normally listen while they are on the go. This is where a podcast hosting website comes in, Libsyn.

Libsyn.com is a website where you upload the audio mp3 file and holds it in the cloud then distributes to iTunes and Stitcher, once it is all set up, via a thing called an RSS feed. I have no idea how it works but it updates these two outlets as soon as I upload the file to libsyn. Now for a service like this it is going to cost, £20 a month to be exact. This is probably one of the most expensive services out there but they are arguably the best. I read through hundreds of reviews and watched hours of YouTube videos on which one to go for and I went for the one that kept coming up and gives you the best feedback. It tells you where in the world your podcast is being downloaded and how many times each episode is downloaded, for example. For the £20 you get loads of analysis and 400mb of storage per month, every month.

And thats pretty much it. So far this podcast has cost me £20 and I’m in my second month. I got my first month free with Libsyn by using a discount code I found on the internet.

Now its all about finding people, business’, charities, communities and interesting stories from around the County to produce the content I want to create and show the people of Cornwall what this amazing place really has to offer its residents.

At the moment my knowledge of Cornwall is quite limited compared to many others but I’m doing this to learn about the place where I live as much as I am trying to create something of value to others.

So the journey around the County has begun. Lets see where it takes us and lets find out what the hell is goin’ on down your way.

Cheers me dears

This episode is a little update to how I'm getting on with the Kernow Kast. Unfortunately the guest I had lined up for this week got caught up in traffic on the A30 so could not make it.

But have no fear, I am still here...or fear it if you're bored of my ummmming and aaaaaahing while I still figure out this talking to a microphone.

Mar 14, 2017

Just me this week! I'm thinking of doing one of these every so often where I talk about how the Kernow Kast is getting on and any other things that might be on my mind regarding the show/channel.

It's a chance for me to practice talking on the microphone and clear the air with anything.

Until next week, Cheers me dears!

I discussed with Leigh how and why he became a town councilor and all the nuts and bolts that make the town council different from the other local authorities and it's place in the running of the local community.

We also discuss his family run business, Celtic Produce, which is located near the Beacon in Bodmin and we touch on what makes podcasting great.

You can get in touch with Leigh on the Bodmin town council website at www.bodmin.gov.uk

I sat down with Thomas Cheeseman at his home to talk about his shop and clothing line, Mustard.

Mustard is an urban streetwear company with a clean, contemporary look based in Looe, Cornwall.

We discuss what Mustard is all about and how Tom got into shopkeeping, which took him to launching his own clothing label.

This conversation is full of great stories and I think what Tom is doing with his company is really inspiring to all young entrepreneurs as it shows what you can do with a little know how and some hard work. It also shows how, in a fast moving industry like fashion wear, what you need to be prepared to do to stay relevant and in business.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did, thank you for downloading and listening to the Kernow Kast

If you would like to get in touch with Tom about his clothing line you can contact him at Whatsup@mustardclothing.co.uk or visit their online store at mustardclothing.co.uk

They are also on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Episode #002 of the Kernow Kast is with a Cornish dairy farmer called Mike Dyer.

He milks over 270 Jersey cows a day and is in the process of expanding.

We talk about his farm, the state of the Cornish agriculture and the how people purchase food.

This is a great in depth conversation for anybody interested in Cornish agriculture and is recorded properly this time!!

Thank you for downloading and enjoy my conversation with Mike, all the best!

The very first episode, here it is. I won't bore you here too long because I probably do that enough in this podcast. It being my first attempt with my best pal I think we done a good job but when I look back at this in a year or 2 I will probably want to delete it. If you're reading this in the future Lewis, don't you posted it for a reason.

Shane is an accountant for Cornish Concrete Products Ltd.

We discuss how and why he got into accountancy and his journey so far. We swap roles at the end so hopefully you can get to know me a little better too.

Don't forget to like us on facebook, follow us on Twitter and Subscribe on iTunes and YouTube...or just 1 of the above would be ace!
